Mastodon East Canyon 22X Neighborhood Council: What's a CoNee G?

What's a CoNee G?

What's a CoNee G?

A CoNee G is a cooperative neighborhood gathering.

It brings neighbors together around common interests and goals in healthy, sustainable ways that minimize the role of societal privilege. A CoNee G is organized by community members based on community interests and concerns without requiring an exchange of money at the events

CoNee Gs make it easy for neighbors to get together around common interests and to support each other during this time of unsettling change -- and beyond! What's it look like?

A CoNee G might look like this:

A picnic area has been reserved at our beautiful Dimond Park. Neighbors are busy setting up tables for specific purposes:

  • One neighbor signed up to organize a table for gently used baby clothes. Word went out to the neighbors to bring items they no longer need to give away to neighbors who can use them.
  • One neighbor signed up to organize a table to share information about emergency preparedness. Neighbors will gather and exchange ideas and possibly launch an initiative for the neighborhood.
  • One neighbor signed up to organize a table for leftover construction materials from home projects that other neighbors might be able to use.
  • There will be a table for block-by-block organizing.
  • The community resource officer will have a table where neighbors who have experienced crime can gather and support each other and formulate ideas for staying safe, which they will communicate to the neighborhood as a whole.
  • A dad wants to start a "Sticky Allies" club for neighborhood children in which they learn about all varieties of difference from the perceived societal norm and learn to stick up for each other -- stick together as allies. He organizes a table to introduce the idea.
  • A lover of mystery wants to exchange mystery novels and is setting up a table for that.
  • Some folks who are struggling with getting basic needs met organize a table to connect with people who can offer support. People discuss ideas for providing better community support for struggling neighbors.
  • Neighbors come and explore whatever tables interest them, meeting neighbors with common interests. Some get ideas for tables they want to organize at future gatherings. They go to the website to sign up!
You might be thinking, "This would be more fun with food!"

Now I'm thinking: "Maybe someone will organize a table to sample homemade vegan dishes and share the recipes!"

The gatherings happen every third month to start. Each gathering is different based on who has the time and interest to organize the tables. The bulk of the effort is spread across many members of the community. It's like a potluck! CoNee Gs are as amazing as neighbors make them. Here in Oakland? I believe they will grow into amazing in no time.

See you at the CoNee G!!
